Data Center Fire Safety

Data centers require a special approach to fire safety due to their high-energy-density equipment and continuous operation requirements. While traditional sprinkler systems extinguish fires, they can cause significant water damage to servers and active equipment, jeopardizing service continuity. Therefore, gaseous fire extinguishing systems, which do not damage equipment, are preferred as standard in data centers.

NFPA 75 (Protection of Information Technology Equipment) and NFPA 76 (Protection of Telecommunications Facilities) standards define the design criteria for fire detection and suppression infrastructure in data centers. The European standard EN 15004 defines the design, installation, and maintenance requirements for gaseous fire suppression systems. Comparison of Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems

There are three main gas extinguishing technologies used in data centers. FM-200 (HFC-227ea) offers the advantage of fast discharge time and compact storage, but its GWP value (3220) is an environmental disadvantage. Novec 1230 is an environmentally friendly alternative that remains in the atmosphere for only 5 days and has a GWP of 1; however, it is more expensive than FM-200. IG-541 (Inergen) consists of natural gases (nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide) and has a GWP of zero; however, it requires more storage space. All three systems can be safely used in areas where people are present and reach design concentration within 10 seconds.

Early Detection: VESDA Technology

VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) is an aspiration-based detection system that detects smoke at a very early stage, before it is visible to the naked eye, through air sampling. Unlike traditional point detectors, VESDA offers a four-stage warning system (Alert, Action, Fire 1, Fire 2), allowing for gradual intervention based on the severity of the threat. This enables preventative measures to be taken before a fire starts, protecting data center operations without interruption.

Reasons Why VESDA is Preferred in Data Centers

In data centers, traditional smoke detectors can be slow to react due to high airflow. VESDA eliminates this problem by continuously sampling the air. Thanks to its laser-based detection technology, it detects even the smallest smoke particles and provides warnings minutes or even hours before a fire occurs. This early warning time provides critical time for the operations team to respond.
